From Madeline Champagne:
The first reported butterfly sighting this spring was an Eastern Comma at Great Blue Hills on March 8th. (There were also 2 other reported sightings in Massachusetts on that date).
Typically, the first butterflies that we see in the spring are Eastern Comma, Mourning Cloak, and Compton's Tortoiseshell. These species have spent the winter in the adult stage! You can see the Eastern Comma, Mourning Cloak, Compton's Tortoiseshell on the Massachusetts Butterfly Club website.
The slopes area and the summit at Great Blue Hill are good locations to see many species of butterflies throughout the season. Many of the Hairstreak butterflies can be seen there during their flight period in July.
